Tool Bars….Where do they all come from?

April 11, 2011

Sometimes us techies come across great websites that we don’t really want to share. That’s because they are handy tools of the trade.  This month’s web site is a great time saver for installing all that mundane software when you get a new computer. You know the list: Gotomeeting, Adobe reader, iTunes, Java, Skype, Dropbox … and it goes on and on and on.  [2]www.ninite.com allows you select what free programs you want to install on your computer in one fell swoop. Click on the programs you want to install … click on the HUGE GREEN BUTTON THAT SAYS “GET INSTALLER” and voila .

Ok, here comes a good one! Now and again, we’ll get a call from a customer telling us about a noise their computer is making. It’s the typical bring your car into the shop and let them diagnose the noise. Much easier said than done. In most computers you have 2-3 moving parts, tops. The hard drive (which is headed towards solid state, no moving parts), a fan for your processor, power supply and/or possibly your video card and a CD player. Well, usually the noises we hear come from a hard drive or failing fan. Have a strange noise coming from your computer? Think it might be a hard drive? Well this web site recorded the sounds of failing hard drives by manufacturer. Neat!
